What you need to know

Before you buy the first thing you need to be aware of is that in October 2021 Apple updated the most powerful MacBook Pro models. There are now two 14in MacBook Pro models, which replace the 13in models that were previously using Intel’s 2.0GHz processors, and three new 16in MacBook Pro models.

These new MacBook Pro models offer incredibly powerful M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. We are seeing discounts on these models, although they do seem to be selling out quickly. Read all you need to know about the new 14in MacBook Pro and 2021 16in MacBook Pro in our separate articles. We also have a review of the 2021 16in MacBook Pro and a review of the 14in MacBook Pro.

In addition Apple is selling the two 13in MacBook Pro models with M1 chips (introduced in November 2020). Read about Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro. Plus our review is here: 13in M1 MacBook Pro review. The entry-level MacBook Pro are still a good buy, they just aren’t quite as ‘Pro’ as their counterparts.

You may not be keen on jumping to M1, M1 Pro or M1 Max straight away. If you are wondering whether to buy one of the new Macs with Apple processors, or to stick with Intel, these articles might help: Should I buy an Intel Mac? and Should I buy an M1 Mac? Our advice is that you should get an Mac with an Apple processor, not Intel.

For more help choosing the best Apple laptop read our buying guide where we cover all the models. We also have a Mac buying guide that covers the whole range. We also explain the differences between the MacBook Air and Pro.

And for another way to save money on a new Apple product read about how you can trade in old products at Apple and other resellers and get money off. Read: How Apple trade in works and saves you money.

Best MacBook Pro deals right now

We will explain how you can spot a good deal further down this article, but if you can’t wait here are some of the best deals for each of the different models right now. We’re also separately looking at where to buy the MacBook Pro 16 and Pro 14 (2021) in both the UK and US, since they are out of stock in so many places.

If it’s a MacBook Air you are after, check our round up of the best MacBook Air deals out. You can also look below for more MacBook deals.

In each case we’ll explain what the current price is at Apple so you can compare the deal that’s on offer. In the case of the Macs that Apple no longer sells we will share the price Apple used to sell it at.

Note, here we have lots of deals from third-parties, but one benefit of buying from Apple is you could trade in your old Mac and get money off. We have an article explaining How to get money off with Apple’s trade-in program. (Some Apple resellers also offer trade-in deals).

Best Refurbished deals

From time to time there are some excellent Apple Refurbished Store deals on the M1 Macs, they tend to quickly sell out. Check the links at Apple’s selling M1 MacBook Pros with £230 off. Some of these were out of stock when we checked but we recommend you click through to check because Apple gets stock back in regularly.

MacBook Pro 2021

MacBook Pro 2021

Although from time to time Apple drops the price of its MacBooks this is quite a rare occurrence: Apple never really offers discounts on its Mac laptops – other than through its official refurbished store.

For that reason you should pay a visit to the Apple Refurbished Store to see if you can find cut-price MacBook Pro models. These refurbished models are MacBook Pro laptops that were returned to Apple, perhaps due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a year’s warranty.

We have seen Apple offering a refurbished 13in 1.4GHz MacBook Pro for £1,059, for example. This was the May 2020 model, which cost £1,299 before Apple replaced it with the M1 model. Buy it from Apple

Alternatively a refurbished 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, which was originally released in May 2019 and has 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, cost £1,359 on the Refurbished store. When Apple introduced that model it cost £1,799. Buy it from Apple.

Amazon also has a certified refurbished store for Apple products but we would advise against buying any products that are older than five years – most of the products we see on the Amazon refurbished store are unfortunately very old.

Find the latest Apple refurbished deals here. We also have this advice about buying a refurbished Mac. Plus, if you are considering buying a second hand Mac read: Should I buy a second hand Mac?

How to find a good MacBook Pro deal

If you want to be sure that you are finding the best deal we recommend that you read through all our advice below.

1. Beware of misleading retailers

Some retailers have been known to be misleading about RRP to make a deal look better than it is. Always compare to the current price on the Apple Store or, if it’s an older model take a look at the Apple refurbished store (where Apple sells reconditioned, discontinued stock with a full year’s warranty) to make sure you’re getting good value.

2. Check how old it is

Speaking of which, you also want to be careful of the age of any given MacBook as models from different years might have similar looking specs on paper. For example, the processor speed can be misleading if you aren’t sure what generation of processor is being used – so take care to double-check processor speeds and generation, and even model numbers to make sure you’re not paying over the odds for a laptop from a few years ago.

3. Make sure that a newer model wouldn’t be better

Another thing to consider if you find a deal on a old MacBook Pro that has been discontinued by Apple: it is important to know what changed when the model was eventually updated. You should note, for example, that when Apple updated the entry-level 13in MacBook Pro in early 2020, and the 16in in 2019, it made changes to the keyboard following a number of issues with the previous keyboard design. At the same time Apple also doubled storage. So beware that a deal on an older model may not be as good as it looks.

4. Find out how much if should cost

There are now three sizes of MacBook Pro: 13in, 14in and 16in. Before the end of 2019 there was also an 15in MacBook Pro, but Apple replaced that with the 16in model. You may still find the 15in model, and any of the discontinued models, available.
